Leadership
As an editor, I guide my fellow peers as they navigate journalism at The Huron Emery. I encourage creativity and push my peers to the best of their ability so they can put their best work out into the world.
Communication is the most important thing for a leader. In our "families," editors and students were in a space where they could ask for help from a close group and provide feedback to each other. Checking in with these families became a weekly habit after daily check-ins were no longer needed and members felt comfortable exploring assignments independently.
As this is my first year as an editor, I reflected a lot on my responsibilities and my role in The Huron Emery. Beyond making sure the newspaper is printed on time, planning content, redesigning pages, and supporting staff writers, I wanted to create a legacy. Not centered on me, I wanted to create something that would be immortalized in The Emery. No matter how much time would pass, I wanted to leave a beneficial impact here that would be appreciated by future generations of editors, staff writers, and most importantly, our audience, my peers.
As a photographer, I teach lessons about the basics of taking pictures beyond just pushing the button. I emphasize the image and the story more than the technical and fancier aspects of the process.
As social media editor-in-chief, I teach my peers how to create posts using Canva templates of our own. I emphasize the importance of consistency in a uniform Instagram feed while also promoting creativity with videos and constants within our social media coverage.
