Design
The world of layouts, colors, and more!
I don't know when exactly I started designing. I just know that when I started, I never stopped. Designing the newspaper is a hidden passion of mine, as I enjoy constructing pages to correctly and effectively display the work of my peers and me.

Front Pages
The First Impression!
Debatably, the front page is the most important one. It sets the tone for the paper, constructing a strong first impression to draw in the reader. It's also the most standard. I love to push the boundaries, but the hardest part is knowing when to stop.
This is the cover page of the second issue in the eighth volume. Since the front page stayed true to its original format, my main task was to create an eye-catching visual to be paired with the NIL story. I used my photo and a publicly available scan of a hundred-dollar bill to depict money's influence in the world of high school sports, especially at Huron. In Adobe Photoshop, I played around with gradient maps and blending modes to create the photo illustration shown on the page displayed on the left.
Spreads
Colors and graphics galore!
In contrast to the front and inside pages, the spreads are where the creativity lies. They're printed in color, so I love to use that to my advantage. The packages are always so interesting and I am so thankful to have so many good writers at The Emery because it is a privilege to depict their work in packages like this.
To go along with the story package, I wanted something to link the two pages together that visually depicted the connection between the three stories. I used the colors of the Instagram app logo to create a similar gradient in Adobe Illustrator as the liquid pouring out of the phone, paired with likes, comments, and follows. The person in the dress is meant to resemble Belly, the character from the show The Summer I Turned Pretty, adding on to the allusion set with the title. The giant telescope is meant to represent the pervasiveness of social media as Kodali’s article mentions. I used the blue from the gradient to create more space for the second non-dominant.
Photostories
Pictures galore!
Photostories are a pride and joy of mine— combining pictures and design to create an attention-grabbing piece in the newspaper. I love displaying my peers' work in ways more complex than simple Instagram posts and providing context to add to the story shown.
Inside Pages
The meat of the paper
Arguably the most boring, inside pages are underrated and neglected. I find myself enjoying the little bits of creativity I include in the designs, not to take away from the articles but to add, to emphasize, and most importantly, to breathe life into the page.
